Cannot mute WH-1000XM3 when in use with computer

When using mute meida control on laptop with Windows 10 & WH-1000XM3 bluetooth headphones the headphones immediately un-mute the laptop again. Similar applies with turning the volume down to 0, the headphones turn the volume back up to 1.

This doesn't happen with other bluetooth devices and I've never seen such behaviour before. It happens to multiple computers and the common denominator is the headphones.

I assume this is a fault with the headphone driver and should be reported to the development team.

I have seen this issue posted elsewhere but cannot contribute to this other Sony community.

The mods suggestion that different headphones have different capabilities is as good as useless and the other suggestion of changing output mode to headset is unhelpful as they've failed to understand the point of the headphones showing up as two different devices.
