AT&T says Mini Pro is not 3G

Hi,

I just purchased an Xperia Mini Pro from eBay. The About Phone information confirms it's an SK17i. I called AT&T to activate it, gave them my IMEI number, and they said it's not a 3G phone! They said it was 2G and would not work with a data plan.

If I look up my IMEI number at http://imei-number.com, it says my phone has "3G: HSDPA, 7.2 MBPS; HSUPA, 2 MBPS".

It also says:

DEVICE INFO
Brand: SONY ERICSSON
SONY ERICSSON logo
Model: TEST IMEI
Manufacturer: SONY ERICSSON MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS AB
Device type: TEST DEVICE
Additional info: XPERIA X8, XPERIA NEO

I had them go ahead and enter the IMEI into my account anyway, but no 3G icon appears on my phone and I have no internet access.

The eBay seller was in China. Did Sony make SK17i models that don't work with U.S. 3G? Does that "TEST IMEI" and "TEST DEVICE" mean this phone was never meant for real use? Or could there be some other problem? Where do I go from here?

Thanks,

   Bob

To work on AT&T 3G frequencies, you need the SK17a.  SK17i 3G won't work with AT&T frequencies.

indeed you need the "a" variant (unless is the Xperia S LT26i which will work with both Tmobile and AT&T's 3G) it's a hardware problem, there's nothing you can do, it will only work with 2G frequencies with AT&T
