Will a new drive (DWU54A) work?

Hi, to all Vaio users out there.

I have a PCG-GRT996VP with a DWU54A DVD drive, which sometimes does not work . So, after a long "Sony support story", I´m thinking of buying a new one. Would a new one work in my Vaio (without any registration or so)? Maybe somebody knows...

Assuming the fault lies with your existing drive then the replacement one should just go straight in.

I would suggest that you purchase the replacement from Sony as a part for your computer. Although this would be more expensive than a generic DWU54A (if you can buy them this way) it will avoid having to change the matching bezel/ drawer front for your laptop. It may be simple but it probably isn't.
