People keep showing off their fancy icons in texts but I can't work out how to get them. I've downloaded the emoji keyboard but can't get it working. Has Sony restricted us to the xperia keyboard with its standard smileys?

I guess you referring to emojis. Xperia Z1 supports emoji in the Android 4.4 (KitKat) update. 

Connect your phone to a computer and see if you have an update available for your device: 

http://www.sonymobile.com/update

When it comes to the 3rd party keyboard you have installed, it will only work in apps that supports emojis and your keyboard.

Well actually.. yes I'm glad to have these extra icons but i'd rather they didn't show up in the predictive text options because it means i'm down to 2 options rahter than 3 now in some cases, any ideas on that?
