Pretty new to this but just thought I'd ask.
I have in the last week taken delivery of a Sony AR-71zu computer only to find that the 640 GB advertised, only shows as 320, and is a problem with the RAID 0 DRIVES.

I bought this Computer from Laptops direct with a £39 Pre-Inspection, but Laptops Direct, say it is a Software fault and to contact Sony. Surely Pre-Inspection is to iron out all faults before delivery! Which they have not.

the Vaio specifics shows:
Hard Drive Type Serial ATA RAID 0 (0 and 1 supported) 2x320GB

which means that the computer clones the first 320 GB to the 2nd one for you security.
If you want to use the full 640 GB you have to change the raid configuration.

Normally you are able to change this option in your Bios, to enter it use F2 while starting up.

The vendor is liable if they have sold you something not working properly. It sounds like the software has been installed on a single disc or the discs have been configured in RAID 1.

The vendor should replace the Vaio for one with the software installed correctly. If you have a problem then I would phone Sony and ask for guidance.

You could try to fix it first. The first thing to do is to carry out a full recovery of your system from the hard drive recovery and when given the option, choose RAID 0.

To change the RAID configuration requires a full reformat of both discs so make sure you are connected to the AC adapter and restart your Vaio. Recover your system by following the instructions in your Recovery and Troubleshooting Guide on Page 38 by tapping F10 during bootup. You can download the Guide from here: -

Thanks to you both for replying,

Firstly, Laptops Direct who sold the machine insist it is Sony, under their warranty, to sort this out.
I have been in touch with Sony, who are going to get back to me, so nothing sorted as yet.

I don't want to put too much information on the machine, as I may have to recover the drive.

As Blencogo says best to restore it yourself and choose RAID 0, this will let you use 640GB.

Laptops Direct are not going to say it was them, they don't want you asking for your £38 back. In future I'd go with a reputable firm like eBuyer, they've always been very helpful and have gone the extra mile.
