Probs with my VGN-NR21J/S

Hello members this is my second post.. I'm not technically minded and new so please be patient, tks. I have a usb dongle for internet use but when I insert it or remove it I get 'Blue screen'. I even tried closing the dongle prog then removing it 'Blue screen again - and some sort of Bios error!! Whatever that means. I've only had this laptop 3 months max now, so is there any downloads I need to fix this? If so, can you give what is needed? I did go to sony site for downloads but there are so many on there I wouldnt have a clue which one I would need. Also my laptop is running very slow.. and even pages on here a slow to open pages to read. I was told by the shop that my dongle should not cause my laptop to crash. :slight_frown: Help. Tks

Hi maurles and as always you are very welcome.

As your NR21 has an inbuilt wireless network card, I assume this is a dongle to connect to a cellphone 3G network?

What make is the dongle what network does it connect to and did it have software from the manufacturer? Is it Vista compatible?

Have a look for the message on the blue screen and post the full message here if you can. I think this is almost certainly an incompatible or corrupt driver from the dongle manufacturer. It is their software downloads you will need to check.

Come back with more info and someone will point you in the right direction.

Hi Blencogo tks for your support. I have a usb modem made by Huawei model E160G supplied by phone company 3 Mobile Broadbank. I have been told that it is a 'mass storage device' it installs directly from the device. It works fine when I can get a signal (I'm on a boat on the canal system so I expect signal probs). This dongle is the latest device from 3 and I think it was only released last July 08, The box says system requirements : windows 2000/XP/Vista or Mac OS. To give the msg from the 'blue screen' is difficult as it doesnt stay on the screen long enough to read it, laugh, but I did see a bios driver error come up. My son has XP and he uses the 3 dongle with no probs at all. Also, any ideas why my pc runs so slow now as only 3 months old? Tks for your help much appreciated.

Have you installed the 3 software from the CD?

Installing the Vista drivers for E160G

Certain software that you may have installed on your computer can be incompatible with the Huawei E160G modem. If you have any of this software installed you will need to disable it, or uninstall it.

Alcohol 120%
AnyDVD
Camera Fix (WebCam software)
Clone CD/CloneDVD
Cyberlink Power DVD
Daemon Tools
Dell MediaDirect Express
DVD Shrink
HP Quickplay
HP DVD Play
HotSync Manager 6.01 (part of Palm Desktop 4.1.4)
Napster
Nero Image Drive
Norton Save and Restore
Norton Ghost
NTI CD/DVD Maker
Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD Suite
Pinnacle Media Suite
Roxio Win on CD
Roxio CD Creator
All Ulead software

I think Roxio is preinstalled on your Vaio - have you got any others installed?
