Overheating problem?

I have a vgn-fj3s/w which was bought sometime over the summer of 2006 so is out of warranty at the moment, the laptop works but it cuts out after about 20 minutes while getting hot on the left-hand side of the base. As the laptop is out of warranty it seems pointless to send it back to sony if I can fix it myself.

The main fan seems to have stopped working, have tried to look online for replacement fans but cannot find any, nor the specification of what fan is in this laptop.

Can anyone recommend where I can find the specs of the fan or a place to buy one in the UK.

Many thanks.

Hi hammer249,

I think the fan may be a custom Sony unit.

I would try to clear the cooling vents with compressed air but it sounds like you may have to take it apart and give the cooling assembly a good clean and service. The fan may just be jammed with dust.

It is quite complex to get at the cooling unit as you will have to remove the keyboard and then the palmrest. If you PM your email address to me, I will send you the FJ-Series manual which will help you. It is too big (2MB) to upload here.
