DVD ROM Firmware update

Having had a good clean up of my three year old PCV RS 504 desktop, I decided to download the offered update for my bios on the Sony site.
Brilliant, it worked first time and somehow sorted out a tendency to crash playing certain games.
I then tried the firmware update for my DVD-Rom drive ( thank god I didn't try this on by DVD-RW drive).
I stuck rigidly to the intructions an checked each one before running. Result, disaster.
When the computer re-booted windows announced that it had found new hardware. It then said the the LOGO's were unsigned and gave two options, continue anyway, or cease installation.
I tried install anyway and up popped the installation wizard telling me that it could not be installed because the data was invalid.
The net result is that windows tries to install the new hardware at each boot up which is a bit frustrating.
I submitted the case to the e-support web site and after a couple of days got a reply asking me for more information. I have tried four times to "add notes" as requested. Each time it appears to have gone through but disappears into space.
Is this e-support only available to machines still under warranty ??? If so why answer my query in the first place. The Sony support site must be the most fragile site on the web even crashing to "inform microsoft" logo on a regular basis. It's probably why the downloaded update didn't work. Has anyone got access to the people who run this site ?

Unbelievably, two hours after posting the above, the site finally started accepting my added notes. I nervously submitted my answers and await response.
