Dead Vaio - warranty advice please

My Sony Vaio - vpc-eh1l0e has given up the ghost after only a year and 4 months. How can I check how long (if any) is left on my warranty? If it is infact dead - can anyone reccommend a student priced laptop (at least 15")?
