Xperia M2 won't turn on. LED blinks red then green, and repeats in a cycle

For the third Xperia that's presented charging / bootup problems (previous problems were wtih Z-series)

The M2 was working fine, put on charge overnight and is dead next morning.

I already tried:

  • forced shutdown
  • forced 2-min restart
  • three-button restart (vol-up + vol-own + power) until I get the vibrate

Display comes alive to show the battery empty icon, then I put the device on charge and the indicator LED flashes red and then flashes green, and continues to cycle through this sequence.

Please - let me know if you have any other ideas!

Update: I left the phone connected to my PC all day, with SIM and SD card removed, connected to USB3 port. Although the charge light was not showing when I left it at 9am, on my return at 5pm tI was pleased to find the device fully charged. All is well now with SIM and SD card re-inserted
