KD-48X8305C not starting up

Hi,

This morning my Sony KD-48X8305C would not start. I tried many of the suggestions on this board (unplugging, leaving unplugged for an hour, factory reset attempt - holding power and volume-down buttons and replugging-in) and none worked. 

About 3 hours later the TV switched itself on partially. It is now stuck in a loop of being off, the Sony logo appearing and then cycling off again, with it getting to the 4 android circles on occasion before cycling off again.

How do I get the TV to start properly?

There are some suggestions on this board that this is a known fault with this range of TVs and that it needs Sony to repair. The TV is out of Warranty, but does the Consumer Protection Act cover this? 

Any advice welcome...

Spoke to Sony service line - they were not helpful. Said nothing other than unplug and try the force reset. Gave me a number of Forth Electronics - any experience with them? They only open for 4 hours a day, so will have to wait to Monday to speak with them.
