16mm pancake lens help

could anyone tell me, should the 16mm pancake work in manual focus mode?

i ask this because when you turn the focusing ring on lens, nothing happens, the same goes for DMF mode

is this a fault with the lens?

any help would be gratefully appreciated

Could you please let me know the exact camera model that you are using here? Also, is the lens model the SEL16F28?

Yes thats the lens, and the camera its being used with is the the nex 5n

When the camera has been set to Manual Focus mode turing the MF ring on the lens by default instantly enlarges the image on the LCD (Manual Focus Assist mode). However, if you hae set the MF assit mode to OFF in the setup menu the image will not be magnified, however the focus distance will be changed.

Check the following:

Does MF assist work after performing a reset of the camera (setup menu)

Check whether MF assist is enabled in the setup menu.

Manual focus assist works fine but the lens won't focus at all unless its in AF

so you mean the image is magnified but when you turn the MF ring the focus does not change at all?

That is a defect and I would contact the Sony service center.

Of course you can also try cleaning the lens contacts before that. Do you have the chance to try the 16mm lens on another NEX camera, maybe in a photo store?
