Z3 repeatedly falls due to slippery back

I have an issue with the z3 which I believe is a design flaw.

The glass back, while very nice, is so smooth that it just won't stay on many surfaces. I've put it on a book on a table, and it falls off within a minute. I have it plugged in overnight on a wooden bedside table, and it slowly slides off onto the floor. I even put it on a cushion on the sofa and it slides off that as well.

I've compared each scenario with a Samsung Galaxy S3, with a smooth plastic back, and an iPhone 5s with a smooth metal back, and neither of them slide at all.

If I was doing anything odd like tilting the surface or putting it on an already sloping table, I wouldn't complain. But I think this is going to happen to many people. I've seen comments about this on reddit, xda-developers, gsm arena and on a review on The Register website. The ease at which the phone slides and falls is, In my opinion, totally unreasonable, and ought to be addressed by Sony because their design has caused a problem which could so easily lead to the phone smashing, simply because it's been plugged it in to charge - a problem which doesn't happen with two other phones I've tried, and I doubt happens with most others.

Yes it's easy to buy a case but I don't see why I should have to spend more, simply to stop my phone falling on the floor, and which would hide the design of what is otherwise a beautiful phone.

Does anyone else have this problem? Ideally I'd like Sony to provide, free of charge, some kind of case (or other creative design) to fix this, because the ease at which is slips is pretty ridiculous! If any Sony designers read this I'd love to know your thoughts. And if anyone else recognises this problem please make yourselves known.

My remedy for the slippery design of the Z3 was to apply a dbrand skin on the back. Just a suggestion.

The Sony service here in Hungary offered to fix my cracked screen for 429 usd. I refused.

I didn't even try to get it fixed for free...

Hello all

I just had to create a profile to post a reply here.

The very same thing happened to me a week ago and now the phone is trashed and broken.

I notice from the video posted that your phone is also copper coloured. So was mine. Is it possible that only our color is more affected?

I believe that it is possible that the copper model has an extremely low coefficient of friction compared to the other colors. I wonder who can run that test? Maybe those following this thread could indicate what color/s they have had a problem with.

I received a quote of $250 to repair my phone.  So I have just put it in the bottom drawer to forget about it.  It makes me so angry when I see it and I KNOW that it is a design and manufacturing fault that Sony are ignoring.

We are publishing warnings throughout our network.

palmie: What network is that?

Some pro youtuber should make a nice quality video to test how slippery this phone is.

Just looked back & noticed it was yourself that posted a video Thinking_Face  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0i5lFn3tZM

Yes, it was me but i made it with my old phone, which makes crap quality videos and it's not professional whatsoever.

Some hotshot, latest phone reviewer, native english speaker should make it with professional equipment. Test the slipping on different types of surfaces and measure the degree of incline.

I totally agree. Without some kind of stickier case, this phone is designed to fall off EVERY surface I've placed it on. Already, after two weeks, the thin glass screen cover it had applied when I bought it is cracked cause the **bleep** phone will not sit on a flat surface without gravitating towards the floor. Sleek and all that, but impractical.

I have exactly the same problem,I thought my phone was haunted at first.Ive solved it for now by putting a screen protector on the back of the phone which has made it 100% better.
