I'm not quite sure that I understand correctly what you mean with a hard reset, could you please elaborate a bit?
The resets that you can perform is either a factory reset, or performing a software repair using Xperia Companion.
The difference between the resets are that the software repair will reinstall the latest available software in the device, something that a factory reset does not do.
Keep in mind that both resets will delete all user data from the device, so creating a backup using Xperia Companion before resetting the device is advised.
