Unfortunately system UI has stopped: Xperia Z3+

I just upgraded my Xperia Z3+ phone to the latest upgrade available from Sony. The result was that I receive the following message immediately after phone restart:

Unfortunately system UI has stopped

I am unable to take a back up of the phone or even factory reset it since the screen turns black after the above message appears. 

Is there a way to handle this issue?
