UI system crash - even resetting phone doesn't work

I have a Sony Xperia Z5 compact - all going well for a year or so. And then suddenly I was getting a UI system crash whenever I tried to click on WiFi. It's very frustrating as it means I can only use WiFi where I already have a logged password. Also, some apps - like Sonos Controller - refuse to work.

The problem still persists in safe mode. I've reset the phone twice and the problem still comes back. I've tried it without my main SIM card and the problem continues.

Is there anything else I should try?

You can try a software repair with Xperia Companion (is better than a factory reset) and test the device without installing any backup.

Thanks @NunoSEN2. Yes, I tried this but still doesn't work and the UI system crash returns. Any other ideas? Am I going to have to throw this phone?
