It's because Facebook messenger is a piece of trash... so go use Facebook Messenger Lite instead...
If you're using a browser, you'll need to force desktop mode, and make sure the browser URL is www.facebook.com, not m.facebook.com. This will let you use the Internet Browser to access facebook just like on a PC, without the crappy autozoom-autocenter, and mobile menus...
Then, in
Settings >> Apps >> Settings Cog >> Opening Links
Make sure that any Facebook App or Messenger doesn't try to open anything automatically, and set it to "Always Ask", or "Do not open supported links"
