Silent mode randomly engages

In the last week or so my phone keeps putting itself into silent mode, so it doesn't ring when someone is calling me or make a sound when I get messages. This is a nuisance as I keep missing calls. The only way that I can get the phone to ring is to restart the phone, however it will then ramdomly set itself back into silent mode at some later point in time. When I go into sounds and notifications it will not allow me to increase the ringer volume. Any ideas techno gurus?

can you elaborate more "it will not allow me to increase the ringer volume" ?

Try rebooting into safe mode

Press and hold Power Button > Tap and hold POWER OFF > Tap on OK to reboot into safe mode

See if the problem persist in safe mode. To exit safe mode just restart normally.
