Lost space in internal memory

Hello Sony Staff!

I used the phone without problems until now, with many applications

shifted to the SD card.

Some days ago, switching on the phone, the applications installed on SD card

were unlaunchable: their graphical icon in the home screen was substituted

by a grey Android logo for each one of them.

In the Applications setting, I could only see the name of each process

but not the commercial name of the application.

As workaround, I noticed that, reinstalling the applications again

over the existing ones, it allowed them to function well without

losing their settings.

I didn't uninstall the applications before reinstalling them.

The applications function well but the big problem is this:

the System Data partition increased at least by 30-40 MBytes,

so the internal space usable for applications is much less of before.

I don't know where and why System Data increased!

How can I solve the issue?

I am uncertain what to do: if, for example, I root the phone,

can I find out what to delete to free up internal space?

If, for example, I pass from Gingerbread to ICS, will I find

more internal space like before or less?

An other option is to restore the phone at factory level.

I hope you can suggest me some method to recuperate internal storage:

From your description it sounds like the phone lost contact with the SD-card or that the folder on the SD-card that contains the apps somehow was deleted (for example if phone was connected to a computer in MSC-mode).
Regarding the lost storage, are you sure that all apps have been moved to the SD-card? It could also be updated apps that uses more memory. If you suspect that storage somehow has been lost i don't know of any other solution then a master reset of the phone.

You will have about the same amount of internal storage with ICS.

the problem is that, although I move the apps in SD-card, the executable file

of them, namely the (*.apk) files, still reside in internal memory, while only

the applications' settings effectively move to external memory.

The (*.apk) files are in the folder /mnt/asec.

Probably, this is an Android fact we cannot change.

In my personal case, anyway, I think to have lost additional space that resides

in the internal memory, and I don't know for which purpose.

Some folders are not watchable in internal memory, probably only rooting

the phone could help.

Otherwise, could you link me a safe procedure to perform

the hard reset of the phone?

It should actually be the other way around. The app (*.apk) is moved to the SD-card while the apps data is stored on the internal memory. This is how it works in Android.

Try resetting the phone from Settings -> Backup & reset ->  Factory data reset. I believe that should be enough.

dear Rickard, i have the same problem with vaiadubai, 

and i've just reset my phone but i still lose space internal phone memory.

it didn't work at all.

Is there any other solution for this?

Dear sony i have a sony xperia c
it suppose to be 4GB internal memory but 1GB is just showing.. what can i do
i can't install any apps any more

plssss..help
