I've been trying to download the update to VAIO Update that it insists it needs before it will do anything, but the download never completes. As VAIO update is stuck, I've tried via the web (Firefox using links from http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/computing/vaio/downloads/updates/index.aspx?l=en_GB&m=VPCEA1Z1E_B), command line FTP, and Core FTP LE (ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/VAIO/Updates/EP0000221850.exe). They all fail.
Core FTP retries multiple times, but eventually gives up. Both Firefox and Core FTP couldn't get the whole file, only 16190312 out of 16800744 bytes. Every time it was 16190312 bytes.
It seems a little like this problem: https://www.sony.co.uk/discussions/message/545105#96380. But perhaps it is something to do with the DSL router where I am needing a reboot, as this suggests: http://www.dougv.com/blog/2009/02/10/ftp-error-425-cant-open-data-connection-time-to-reset-your-rout.... Less likely is the MTU setting as per: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/427942-vaio-update-error-there-has-been-problem-downloading-ftp....
Is something wrong with Sony's servers here? Is anyone else experiencing issues, particularly with this file?
Thanks very much,
Mark.
Turns out it was the router...I had the chance to try with a different one and it was fine.
Sony should really support something more firewall-friendly, like HTTP download, instead of FTP.
