Battery Not Recognised in Laptop

Hi - I have a Sony Vaio purchased in 2006. Up until now I have never needed to use the laptop without my power supply. I have now discovered that I can't as my laptop is telling me that I don't have a battery!!! I have checked it is plugged in properly etc and it is, do I need to change any settings? I googled the issue and it seems lots of other people have the same issue. I just can't find any solutions?

Please help, I don't really want to have to spend money on a new battery.

Is would appear that you need to purchase a replacement battery..

A simple way to check if this is a battery or possible hardware problem is to take your Vaio to a local stockist and ask if you can try another similar battery in your Vaio..
