So you’ve taken some awesome pictures on your camera and you want to send them to your friends or upload them to your social media platform. Maybe you want to use the GPS on your smartphone to add location details to your photos too. This article will show you how it’s done.

First things first: Download the Imaging Edge Mobile app. You’ll find it (for free) on Google Play or the App Store.

To start transferring images and videos to your smartphone, you’ll need to:

  1. Ensure the camera and the smartphone have a stable Wi-Fi connection. This may require turning other devices off.
  2. Put your camera in Playback mode.
  3. Press MENU > View on Smartphone and select your desired mode (this will depend on if your smartphone uses an AndroidTM operating system or if it’s an iPhone®).

If you have an AndroidTM phone:

  1. Open the app on your mobile and select the SSID of your camera.
  2. Enter the password from the camera when prompted on your phone.
  3. Select the pictures you want to transfer.

If you have an iPhone®:

  1. Select Settings > Wi-Fi Networks (ON).
  2. Select the SSID of the camera and enter its password.
  3. Start the app and choose the images you want to transfer to your mobile.

You can do it via NFCTM too.

Near-field communication (NFCTM) enables two devices to connect, just by bringing them close together. So, if your camera and your smartphone are both NFCTM-enabled, you can transfer your videos and photos in just one touch!

Before getting started, ensure the NFCTM function is turned on and airplane mode is turned off on both devices, lock-screen and sleep modes are disabled on your mobile phone, and you’ve installed the latest version of the Imaging Edge Mobile app.

To send a single image:

  1. Playback the image you want to send to your smartphone.

To send multiple images:

  1. Press MENU > Wireless > Send to smartphone.
  2. Select This Image, All Images on This Date or Multiple Images.
  3. Wait for on-screen confirmation.

Now all you need to do is touch your mobile device to the camera for 1-2 seconds until the Imaging Edge Mobile app launches. The image transfer will start automatically.

TIPS from Sony

  • Looking for the images you’ve transferred? You’ll find them inside the Imaging Edge Mobile folder on your smartphone.
  • Don’t want to take up too much space on your phone? Or perhaps you need the image at full resolution? To change the size of the images you transfer, open the Imaging Edge Mobile app and go to Settings > Copy Image Size. You can then choose between Original, 2M or VGA.

Add location tags to your images.

You can use the GPS signal on your smartphone to geotag the pictures you take on your compatible camera – handy information to have when documenting your creative adventures or if you ever want to pinpoint a location to revisit!

In preparation for setting this up, you’ll need to have transferred at least one image to your smartphone already via the Imaging Edge Mobile app. You’ll see an option titled ‘Location Information Linkage’ appear at the top of the page.

  1. Confirm a Bluetooth connection is established between your camera and your smartphone. It’s important to do this via the camera and the Imaging Edge Mobile app, not directly via your smartphone.
  2. On the camera, select MENU > Network > Bluetooth Function > On.
  3. On your camera, select MENU > Network > Bluetooth Settings > Pairing.
  4. Launch the Imaging Edge Mobile app on your smartphone, tap Location Information Linkage and activate
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions and select your camera from the list.
  6. On the monitor of your camera, a message will appear. Select OK.
  7. On the camera, select MENU > Network > Loc. Info. Link Set. > On.

The ‘obtaining location information’ icon will display on the monitor of your camera to indicate that it’s working.

TIPS from Sony

  • Using Auto Time Correct will automatically set the correct time and date, according to your smartphone. This is particularly useful when you’re traveling between time zones!
  • Location information can be linked when the Imaging Edge Mobile app is running on your mobile – even if your phone’s monitor is off. However, if your camera has been turned off for a while, geotags may not update as soon as the camera is turned back on, so you’ll need to open the app on your phone.
  • Whilst your camera can be linked with up to 15 Bluetooth devices, it will only share location information with one smartphone. If you want to use a different phone, disable the function on the phone that is connected.
