Sony TA-940R amplifier - ipod connection

Dear All

New member here. I have just been given a great Sony TA-940R amplifier. I am running JBL XTi 20 speakers through thick copper cables and gold-plated Gale plugs with four wires into the four sockets on each JBL and two wires into each side of the A speaker output on the amplifier (wires bunched together on each channel at the amp end of the cable, as the impedance would be wrong otherwise - can't use the full bi-wire system as the JBLs are 6 ohms and the Sony book says it needs 8-16 ohms on bi-wire).

My question is: which input should I plug my ipod/iphone into please? I have it in the phono (record player according to the Sony manual) input and this gives enormous gain and volume but is very bass-heavy. If I plug it into anyother input sockets (tape1 DAT, tape2/DAT, aux, tuner, SACD/CD, I get much lower volume and a slightly 'thin' sound - any ideas please?

Thanks

Slim
