2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

What annoys me the most is that you NEED an external kodi device, people NEED external Youview / Sat / Recording boxes.  This was supposed to be an all in one device for me.  Am trying to decide what to buy for our main lounge, whether to stick with Sony and buy a other x83c, or ditch the one I have and buy Samsung. Just a shame the Samsung sets aren't very pretty compared to the minimalist Sonys.

Thanks all for posting your Issues - If only I had found this before purchasing the KD55X8509C found this with a quick googling of issues I was having and here we are. In one way was good to find that it was not just me having problems with this but its such a shame as I can only describe the picture quality on this as remarkable.

Lucky for me this is just a recent purchase, Sent off email yesterday evening to get immediate response from the KnowHow Support team this morning (Thanks for all who posted this address in forum) this was followed up with call mid morning. Was a very short conversation with the lady and admittied these are known problems to them, They have given we a reference no and informed the local branch for me to take it into to get a full refund.

Still want a 4K TV so now have to figure out which one to get....

My KD-49X8305C is being picked up by John Lewis tomorrow. I had no argument from them, especially when i presented them with the following list of issues experienced:

1. Needs unplugging from mains to reboot several times a week to eliminate increased unresponsiveness.

2. Upon first waking up from standby mode the TV informs me that it is not connected to the Internet, then a few seconds later it informs me that it is connected. This has only occurred since the YourView update of 4/11/15. The TV is connected via ethernet to my router at all times. I have had to get a power line ethernet adapter as the TV does not receive 5GHz WiFi signals and so cannot reliably stream 4K content via WiFi.

3. Can take up to five minutes after waking up from standby before I can either change a Freeview channel or alter other settings such as volume. By which time I have missed the weather forecast I can woken the TV up to watch!

4. Have to carefully use the “Back” button to exit apps such as Netflix or Amazon Instant Video otherwise the TV becomes unresponsive and will need a restart via unplugging from the mains.

5. Approximately 30% of the time when putting the TV into standby mode it will wake itself up 20 seconds later, resulting in another attempt to enter standby.

6. Takes up to five seconds to change Freeview channels.

7. Sometimes does not respond to the remote and I have a wait for a couple of minutes before attempting second time.

8. Intense use of the YouView guide can result in the TV becoming so unresponsive that a reboot is required.

9. Volume level via ARC to my Sony HT-RT5 sound bar is very low. Selecting a volume level of 35 out of 50 is required for normal programme viewing (such as the news). This increases to 48-49 out of 50 for a music programme that warrants some umpf (such as Strictly)! My 15 years old 16 inch Sony Wega TV in the kitchen is loader (without the base) than what is produced by this machine. This is a real deal breaker.

10. Still no 5.1 sound on Amazon Instant Video.

11. Occasionally the TV tuner complains that there is no antenna plugged in when attempting to select digital TV but if I first select YouView the TV will find a signal.

12. Generally, as the TV is using a dual core as opposed to the quad core used by other manufactures the machine feels like it is constantly playing “catch up” with the request I make of it.

13. Occasionally when selecting digital TV after using an external HDMI port (such as a Mac mini), the sound completely dies (though a picture is present). The only way to cure this is to reboot the TV.

At least on the positive side I've been given household permission to go even bigger with the replacemet TV. Looking forward to John Lewis delivering my new LG 55UF860V tomorrow.

Don't buy a 2015 4k LG TV if you plan on hooking up a Games console or PC, the input lag on them is really high.

Doesn't matter if you are not going to be gaming, but just a friendly heads up !

Was looking at the LG 55UF950V, Not going any smaller than 55" since seing it in prime place in sitting room, Looking at comment on gaming above now need a rethink - Playing GTA via xbox one on the SONY was like playing game again for first time,

Thanks for the heads up. The only gaming I do is very casual on my 4th generation Apple TV. And I think that my own lag will be greater than that of the LG TV.

I trust that connecting my Mac mini as a media server will be okay...

I nearly originally went for an LG too but 100 m/s Input lag is a joke.

LG55UF950v Input Lag

I know a lot of people here are not happy with their Sony sets, and that's fair enough, I can't say I blame you, but one thing my KDX558509c is great at is gaming.

Relatively low input lag by my none too scientific testing of between 25-39m/s in Game mode and about 65m/s with all postprocessing turned on including HDR. ( Which is an outstanding figure with everything enabled )

This is on PS4, Xbox One and Gaming on PC 4k@60hz 4:4:4 RGB.

Fallout 4, GTAV and Star Wars Battlefront look incredible in 4k@60fps.

I even played GTAV 4k@60fps with HDR enabled just for a laugh and it looked STUNNING!
