Have you tried using the latest INTEL (not Sony!) graphics adapter driver from Intel's website? As far as I remember, it is V 15.2. Try it, it may solve your problem.

The truth is: I always do a fresh install with my Vaio laptops, removing all those multimedia server/entertainment platform/etc. stuff. It eats up a lot of RAM and is a source for possible issues.

Try the Intel driver first, it may take care of your problem.

UX1 crashing (BSOD) when zooming

My first post, be gentle! I've had a problem or two with my UX1 straight out of the box. I pressed the zoom keys a couple of times and I get a Blue Screen of Death with the message APC_INDEX_MISMATCH. I found it particularly easy to reproduce the crash if Vista's "Tablet PC Input Panel" is onscreen at the time - zooming in or out results in a pulsing purple border to the window of the handwriting recognition panel and then the crash. Also Vista regularly reports that the Vaio Event Service has stopped working with an unexpected error.

I've filled in some comprehensive reports with Sony online and have completely recovered, restored and reconfigured the machine twice (ouch!) and they now conclude that the unit needs to be returned to be mended. I understand I may be without the PC for 5 to 15 days (is that right under warranty?).

Sometimes new and complex things are faulty but I wanted to know if anyone with a UX1 had experienced this problem as I'm loath to be without my PC (which I rely on) for 3 weeks to find that it's not faulty after all and that a driver or similar is at fault.

How long have you actually had the machine for? If it's under a month I would try and take it back to the retailer you purchased it from as it certainly sounds like it isn't working properly, and if you haven't exceeded the period of time for exchange that would be your best option,

Andy

Since 20th February, from Sony-Style. I haven't made the call yet to see if "return to base" will equal "we'll ship a replacement" but even a new unit will ony help if the problems are not driver related. I wasd interested if any other UX1ers might try this and let me know. Not that I want them crash their machines (!) but it will make me feel better if I know that sendind the one back will definately result in a fix. It takes 6 - 8 hours to set it up each time from scratch (I'm in the middle of doing it at the moment).

Hi Thalamus,

Took your suggestion to visit a Sony Centre today and was able to try out another UX1. I crashed their machine immediately by loading "Tablet PC Input Panel" and pressing zoom plus followed by zoom minus. The resulting Blue Screen Of Death with an APC_INDEX_MISMATCH looked to be identical to the crashes I'm having. I'm therefore more confident that this is not a fault that is specifc to my machine and might be common to all VGN-UX1 PCs running Vista.

I suspect this to be a video fault with "Intel Graphics Media Acceleraator Driver for mobile" handling layers. The pen input window stays the same size whilst the background is zoomed. A purple border can be seen flashing around this panel before the crash.

Thanks for your help. I wait to see what Sony support come up with.

I did try that Intel driver before the first rebuild but it still crashed in the same way. I went back in case I couldn't convince Sony of the problem whilst using a "non-approved" driver. The new driver allows the display to be rotated 4 ways instead of just the two, which was fun - it just still crashed!

Thanks again.
