Problem with USB Modem (e220)

Hope someone can help. I have a HUAWEI E220 USB 3G Modem ( on the THREE network). I purchased this early this summer, and updated the firmware for VISTA. I have been using it successfully on a Philips laptop with retail version of VISTA ultimate.

When I plug it in to my (beautiful!) new VAIO , it only appears intermittently as a USB device. I am going to contact three about this but wondered if you had any other ideas.

I think there is a firmware update (23.11.07)...
