Have you reformatted and installed another Operating System?

Have you deleted some files?

What Utility are you trying to install?

Hi ma6378,

have you reset the BIOS to setup defaults.?

Restart your Vaio and Press F2 when you see the Vaio logo.

wait for the BIOS to load

then press F9 Setup Defaults

ensure yes is highlighted and press enter to confirm

then press F10 Save and Exit, ensure yes is highlighted and press enter to confirm.

The Recovery utility should hopefully now load.

Edit: Could you tell what model you have and what model is listed in the BIOS please..

Did anything in my reply to your PM help.?

Could you tell what model you have and what model is listed in the BIOS and also if the serial numbers on your Vaio match the ones in the BIOS please.?

Sorry about your pm Thalamus, but cannot find how to read them.
Model is the same in the bios, serial not quite sure I have to double check.

Edit: Checked the bios serial is the same, laptop model is VGN-FZ21Z, right bottom of monitor and it match the bios, but underneath the laptop itself on a white label it says the model is : PCG-391m.

Have you download and installed the Original Utilities Package from HERE ..

If not try that then try using the Vaio recovery disc again..

I have downloded all the utilities from that link, also I have unpacked the Application recovery dvd. Cannot install Windvd and when I try to install, from computer devices, the driver for the cards slot the computer reports that is the wrong one. Thanks

Edit: almost forgot, if I install the battery check the program then put my machine in hybernation mode as it does not recognise my battery as original!!!

Have you successfully installed all of the original utilities that you downloaded..

If so and you are still having problems running the Vaio recovery then I you can contact Sony Vaio support either by phone or via e-Support, use the following link to find the contact details: Sony Vaio Support

Hi Thalamus,
I have succesed in installing the driver for the mass storage, bluetooth, but I cannot switch off with the wireless utility, only with its own, installed Windvd haven't tried yet. What I notice though, since I installed the Intel chipset drivers everything seem to install. The only thing partially working is the keyboard, only mute with the Fn key, the multimedia wheel is ok but not the AV and S1 keys. I'm going to have another go to install from the recovery discs and see what happens.

Edit: All working!!!!! ( bluetooth, Fn keys and mass storage.) I think what has done it is having installed the Intel chipset. Still no joy from the recovery discs though. I would advice, from this experience, to install the chipset drivers first and then the other drivers/applications. Thanks again for your help.

I would still advise that you contact Sony Vaio Support, to explain your recovery partition and disc problems, at least then it's officially recorded..

Thanks Thalamus, I will contact Sony, as you say, so there is a record of a fault. The only snag that I have now, I didn't check it properly as I had to go out, is WinDVD. I managed to install it, did both the updates but it still wont recognise the BD, I also noted that in the title says: WinDVD for Vaio and not WinDvd BD for Vaio. Other than that the only thing I find really strange is that without all the bloatware the installation has taken 54GB and I haven't installed none of my apps. Thanks again

Hi Thalamus, Thank you very much for the PM. I have done like you suggested, contact Sony, registered on Esupport but strangely when I try to register my laptop serial number I get an error that its not recognised!!!!
Thank again for your help.

Update: This is the error I get when try to enter the serial:
Your Serial number could not be registered. An automated request has been sent to our e-Support Team to contact you in the shortest delay possible to assist you with the registration.
No one has contact me yet.

Almost forgotten, @ Thalamus the pm is all ok. Should the drive be listed as DVD BD RE* or DVD BD RW. Thank you
