Why does my vaio freeze solid

I have been having regular problem now for over 2 months when i log onto my vaio FE31M it freezes solid, or soon after logging onto the internet, the only thing i can do is press the power button until it switches of wait a few minutes and try again. This can sometimes go on for over an hour (switching it on and of) before i can use it, have tried all the usual such as defraging, disc cleanup, clearing history trails and running the vaio hardware diagnostics (shows no errors) but to no avail, (currently running vista).

Unfortunately it could be many things. The intermittent nature of the problem makes it difficult to diagnose but a driver conflict is a possibility.

Does anything show in System Tools -> Event Viewer?

Have you tried opening IE by right-clicking on it and choosing "Start Without Add-Ons"?

Have you installed any new programs or added any hardware recently?

Thanks Blencogo, nothing shows in system tools, no new programs or hardware added haven't tried opening IE as you have suggested but will try, but system still freezes on the desktop even if i don't want to go on the internet. Could it be a harddrive fault? (laptop is 4 years old).
