When I switch th ePC on it gets as far as the VAIO splash and stops, even without the recovery DVD inserted. To make matters worse I don't have a full recovery set on CD, just DVD

Ho joestockil and welcome.

Will it boot from your DVD Recovery Discs?

If it does then you have a software problem and it is probably fixable. If it does not then it is likely you will need a new drive because the DVD laser is probably faulty.
