Forgotten password and pc companion error code

I recently changed my password on my Xperia M4 Aqua and have forgotten the code, When I attempted to fix the problem through the PC Companion it returned an error message: "Unable to read device software update file (error 12)". I was wondering if anyone had either a way to fix this problem or an alternate method to reset the password.

Hi @MDavies,

Welcome to the community.

You can try this method. If that doesn't work you'll have to do a software repair.

If PC companion is not working correctly there are a few steps that you can try to resolve this.

Try these methods one after the other. Verify after each method whether the problem was solved, before trying the next one.

Make sure that you have a working Internet access. Visit any website, for example, www.sonymobile.com, to verify that the computer can access the Internet. If that is a problem, please check cable, router or the Internet service provider etc.
Check your firewall and make sure that Sony Ericsson Update Engine.exe and PCCompanion.exe are allowed to access the Internet. For instructions, refer to the user guide for the firewall.
Check your proxy settings. If you are trying to update your device when connected to a corporate network, you might be using a proxy. Contact your network administrator for further assistance.
Check that Java is up to date on your computer. https://java.com/en/download/
Restart the computer and try again.

None of those steps worked for me and I am still recieving the same error message. What shall I do?

You're still getting the same error? Are you able to try it on another computer?
