It it just asking me to update the firmware. I already have the latest firmware xxxx.587 in my xperia neo v. What I wanted is to manually backup my contacts, messages, calendar entries, and phone settings to my computer.

Please refer to the nokia pc suite or the nokia ovi suite, you can update your software if you want and if available. and also it gives you the options to backup the phone contents periodically whenever needed. So that if you lose any of the datas stored in your phone you can restore it with the backup. The backup will be stored as xxx.nbu file and can be used for restore.

Is there any option like this to backup my xperia neo v?

For what you want, you can try with Moborobo (http://www.moborobo.com/index.html)

But it's important to remember that with Android can't be make a backup like Windows, and it is not necessarily. In fact, the 'best' backup for Android is Nandroid Backup (but you need root)
