Memory card slot (1) won't let me insert a card, any help?

since all Sony photo cameras use full-size SD-cards, I assume it is one of this type - unless OP tries to enter a Memory-Stick or another card format.

Some Alpha Memory Sticks accept them in fact.

if I recall correctly, the alpha-cameras of the last four years only support SD cards.

Some other Sony cameras though still sport a "dual" slot where you can enter memorySticks or SD-cards - e.g. the Sony Action Cam.

Slot 2 of the Alpha 7 and Alpha 9 for example also supports Memory Stick.

you are right, Slot 2 does. 

The last alpha camera I bought only had one slot and that is SD-only.
